LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Mel Gibson has been charged with drink driving and having an open bottle of tequila in his car.
Gibson, 50, was formally charged yesterday (02.08.06) five days after being pulled over in Malibu for speeding at 87mph.
If convicted, the ‘Signs’ actor could face up to six months in jail.
After being stopped by police, Gibson allegedly released a drunken tirade of anti-Semitic abuse upon the arresting officer.
He is believed to have said: “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”
The actor has since apologised publicly for his behaviour and issued a second apology directly to the Jewish community.
Gibson, who has now checked into rehab to battle his alcoholism, has even asked to meet with Jewish leaders so he can somehow make a mends for his actions.
In a statement, he said: “I’m not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion, to discern the appropriate path for healing.
Meanwhile, American TV producer Merv Adelson took out an advert in yesterday’s Los Angeles Times newspaper blasting movie bosses for not condemning Gibson’s actions.
It read: “Let’s make ourselves proud and NOT support this JERK in any way, just because he’s a so called ’star’.”
Adelson is the co-founder of Lorimar Productions, which produced hit TV show ‘The Waltons’.
