Though Adobe faces at least half a dozen competing online photo editing services, it’s likely to benefit from its strong brand name and from fortuitous timing: There’s considerable worry at the moment among users of Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO)’s Flickr, one of the leading online photo sharing communities, about the service’s future following its likely acquisition by Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT). Dutch Muslim leader Mohammed Rabbae had called for restraint upon the film’s release, which may be one factor that contributed to the unexpected calm. Reaction abroad was decidedly different, however, with large public protests commencing in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other predominantly Muslim nations. Response on the Internet wasn’t without incident, either, as LiveLeak (www.liveleak.com), the first Web site to air the video, decided to remove “Fitna” from its server Friday in reaction to terroristic threats received by the company.

Compounding the challenge, one of Mr. Obama’s most prominent supporters, Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, said Mrs. Clinton should quit the race because she hurt Mr. Obama “more than anything John McCain has said.”

The Clinton campaign showed resolve in the face of the developments, rallying supporters and donors and enlisting prominent surrogates to fight back. Mrs. Clinton told aides that she would not be “bullied out” of the race.
